How to Make Health and Fitness Work for You During Busy Times

How to Make Health and Fitness Work for You During Busy Times

If you're someone who tends to "throw in the towel" when life gets busy, it’s time to rethink your approach to health and fitness. Instead of letting stress derail your goals, consider how food and exercise can serve as powerful tools to support you through challenging times.

Motivation Through Nourishment and Stress Relief

Your motivation when life gets busy should come from viewing food as fuel and nourishment for both your body and mind. Similarly, training should be seen as a stress outlet that keeps your body healthy and strong, rather than an additional burden or something you need to 'fit in'.

Two Key Realisations

  1. Healthy habits make life easier: Nourishing your body and mind with healthy food and moving your body daily can actually make your life easier. It boosts your mental health, enhances your energy levels, and helps you handle busy periods more efficiently. For example, I recently had a conversation with a client who was feeling stressed and resorting to Uber Eats. I suggested she choose healthier options. Many people fall into an all-or-nothing mindset, thinking if they’re ordering takeaway, they might as well indulge. However, making small, healthier choices can contribute to long-term success.

  2. Adjust your approach as needed: It’s important to be realistic about what’s happening in your life. If you’ve shifted from training five days a week and cooking fresh meals daily to a much busier schedule, consider adjusting your routine. This might mean reducing training to three days a week or shortening sessions to 20 minutes. You might also explore meal prep delivery services. Understanding where your motivation comes from—whether it's healthy food or regular movement—can help you make realistic adjustments. Your body goals may need to be adapted to fit your current lifestyle, which is perfectly okay. The focus should be on prioritising and adjusting as needed.

Simplify and Stay Consistent

Healthy eating and regular movement don’t have to mean tracking every meal or training five days a week. If you already have a good understanding of nutrition, focus on making smarter food choices. Adjust your training frequency or duration to suit your current life situation.

Remember, consistent action is always better than perfection. Making small, sustainable changes will have a more significant impact over time than striving for an unattainable ideal.
